چکیده

A body moves in a medium composed of noninteracting point particles ; interaction of particles with the body is absolutely elastic. It is required to find the body's shape minimizing or maximizing resistance of the medium to its motion. This is the general setting of optimal resistance problem going back to Newton. Here, we restrict ourselves to the two-dimensional problems for rotating (generally non-convex) bodies. The main results of the paper are the following. First, to any compact connected set with piecewise smooth boundary B ⊂ R 2 we assign a measure ν B on ∂(convB) × [−π/2, π/2] generated by the billiard in R 2 \ B and characterize the set of measures {ν B }. Second, using this characterization, we solve various problems of minimal and maximal resistance of rotating bodies by reducing them to special Monge-Kantorovich problems.

Optimal Pareto Parametric Analysis of Two Dimensional Steady-State Heat Conduction Problems by MLPG Method

Numerical solutions obtained by the Meshless Local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) method are presented for two dimensional steady-state heat conduction problems. The MLPG method is a truly meshless approach, and neither the nodal connectivity nor the background mesh is required for solving the initial-boundary-value problem. The penalty method is adopted to efficiently enforce the essential boundary co...

A ug 2 00 0 Morphological Image Analysis of Quantum Motion in Billiards

Morphological image analysis is applied to the time evolution of the probability distribution of a quantum particle moving in two and three-dimensional billiards. It is shown that the time-averaged Euler characteristic of the probability density provides a well defined quantity to distinguish between classically integrable and non-integrable billiards. In three dimensions the time-averaged mean...

Newton’s problem of minimal resistance is one of the first problems of optimal control: it was proposed, and its solution given, by Isaac Newton in his masterful Principia Mathematica, in 1686. The problem consists of determining, in dimension three, the shape of an axis-symmetric body, with assigned radius and height, which offers minimum resistance when it is moving in a resistant medium. The...

In this paper we solve the dividend optimization problem for a corporation or a financial institution when the managers of the corporation are facing (regulatory) implementation delays. We consider several cash reservoir models for the firm including two mean-reverting processes, OrnsteinUhlenbeck and square-root processes. Since the cashflow structure of different companies have different qual...

ul 2 00 5 A Note on the Size of the Largest Ball Inside a Convex Polytope Imre Bárány

Let Cm be the convex hull of Bm, and sm the radius of the largest ball contained in Cm. (Due to the apparent symmetries of Cm, such a largest ball is necessarily centered at the origin.) In the paper [B-M-S(2005)] (dealing with rotation numbers/vectors of billiards) we needed sharp lower and upper estimates for the extremal radius sm. Here we determine the exact value of sm which, of course, im...
